Uniques, sets, and runewords have fixed properties, so their appeal comes down to the roll: a Shako with maxed defense trades far above a low one, and a four-socket Monarch (the base for a Spirit shield) or a superior, ethereal weapon base can be a chase item on its own. Sockets, ethereal status, and near-perfect stat rolls on rares and grand charms (the extra life, resistances, or +skills lines) are the difference between "vendor it" and "hold onto it." Runes are prized by scarcity and by which runeword they enable, so their standing rises and falls with what the meta is building.
