Uniques, sets, and runewords have fixed properties, so their appeal comes down to the roll: a Shako with maxed defense trades far above a low one, and a four-socket Monarch (the base for a Spirit shield) or a superior, ethereal weapon base can be a chase item on its own. Sockets, ethereal status, and near-perfect stat rolls on rares and grand charms (the extra life, resistances, or +skills lines) are the difference between "vendor it" and "hold onto it."
